I was 43rd and my girlfriend was 44… hehe..
We felt the line started thickening up, unfairly, in front of us… meaning people were getting off work and joining their friends in front of the line. By the time we reached the storefront, I’m guessing we were around 70. The AT & T manager came out and told us an hour beforehand that we all were fine and he would let people know when he felt they would not be getting one.
About 15 minutes before we reached the storefront, he came out and said it’s gonna be close for those of you that want an 8gig model. He said there were 4:1 8gig over 4gig models. No one was buying the 4gig models. So, anxiety started raising with everyone because no one wanted the 4gig model.
Once we entered the store, played with the thing while employees went to the back to retrieve the goods, they started announcing that there were only 18 left and they were all 4gig models. The person directly behind us got the last 8gig.
When I left, there were about 75 people still outside and only 18 iPhone’s left. You can imagine the moaning and groaning when word started spreading.
So, I’m gonna guess there were 100 or so total at this AT & T store. There were three stores in our city that actually carried them and I’ve heard it was about the same at all three stores.
This was the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. It was fun. I’m sure the hype caused all this, but I must say, when I scrolled a webpage with Safari for the first time, I got a little giddy.
EDIT: I’m activating it now.
