I was 43rd and my girlfriend was 44… hehe..

We felt the line started thickening up, unfairly, in front of us… meaning people were getting off work and joining their friends in front of the line.  By the time we reached the storefront, I’m guessing we were around 70.  The AT & T manager came out and told us an hour beforehand that we all were fine and he would let people know when he felt they would not be getting one.

About 15 minutes before we reached the storefront, he came out and said it’s gonna be close for those of you that want an 8gig model.  He said there were 4:1 8gig over 4gig models.  No one was buying the 4gig models.  So, anxiety started raising with everyone because no one wanted the 4gig model.

Once we entered the store, played with the thing while employees went to the back to retrieve the goods, they started announcing that there were only 18 left and they were all 4gig models.  The person directly behind us got the last 8gig.

When I left, there were about 75 people still outside and only 18 iPhone’s left.  You can imagine the moaning and groaning when word started spreading.

So, I’m gonna guess there were 100 or so total at this AT & T store.  There were three stores in our city that actually carried them and I’ve heard it was about the same at all three stores.

This was the first time I’ve ever done anything like this.  It was fun.  I’m sure the hype caused all this, but I must say, when I scrolled a webpage with Safari for the first time, I got a little giddy.

    EDIT:  I’m activating it now.

Passed on getting one today, but will in the not too distant future.  Tired of the weak web abilities of my Treo 650, and visual voice mail will be very nice 😊  Not too worried about the network speed because its going to be no different then my Treo 650 in the majority of locations I would be on cell for data, and with wifi abilities it will blow away the Treo speed when sitting at a coffee shop, home, office, or just about anywhere I usually am with wifi already… 😉

I decided against the line and just ordered from the Apple store. I have to wait 2-4 weeks, but it’s fine. I plan on reselling it anyways.

Okay, I’m not one for blurting out my opinion and telling you what to do… nor am I one to write a review on the pluses and minuses of of a device like the iPhone…

BUT, GO BUY THIS PHONE IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.

It is revolutionary!  It is better than ANYTHING on the market.

Ellis Lab, your sites look great on this little thing.  The screen is beautiful.  The usability is stunningly unique, new, innovative, etc…

Seriously, if you can afford it, go find one and enjoy.  This thing lived up to the hype.

Anyway, back to the original topic of this forum… I think PXLated is right.  There is something that definitely positions webpages squarely on the screen when you double tap on it.  I have no idea if it is a div or what, but it is something that makes it extremely usable.

From what I’ve read tonight and according to Apple’s iPhone finder, they already have their shipments for tomorrow and will be available…at least at all the Mpls locations listed. Too bad I’m not close to one at the moment.
    ——-

Back to the topic…will be interesting to see what sites work with the tapping and which don’t. We can then probably figure out what they are focusing on.

Edit-Add: How do the forums look?

Well, I tried to make several post on this thread with the iPhone to no avail.  I don’t know why, but when I hit submit, it basically regfreshes the page and dumps me back to the forum message, like I didn’t even submit anything at all…  not sure what’s going on.

Anyway, I’ve gone through expressionengine.com thouroughly and the double tap always centers me on the left, main column content or the right, closest “container” that I tapped on.  Something definitely is centering it.  I’m leaning toward the dom like you originally suggested.

Not having Flash (or Java) is probably a good thing, they’re both resource hogs and battery drainers. I recall reading that in reality, there is only one phone on the market that includes Flash because of that. Adobe hasn’t been able to produce a nice light version.
As far as YouTube, Google is transcoding all those videos to H264 for the iPhone and iTV. I guess it’s far more efficient, better quality and less resource intensive.

Oh Good to know, thank you PXLated! But Wait, stephenslater! I don’t know much about ISP providers and the way the iPhone is setup, doesn’t it depend on a wifi connection? Seems to me that kind of limits the whole web surfing thing because according to their specs if you cant get a wifi connection you forced to use the old service from At&t. And well that’s like going back to caveman speed! Let me know? I am really curious what kind of speeds you get!

Well it probably won’t matter much now cause I’ll have to wait to get one. Every place I called is sold out!!

I have only used it on a wifi connection in my home.  The speed is the same as it would be on my computers.  I hope to test it today on the EDGE network.  Most people I talked to weren’t too concerned about using the EDGE network because that is what all Blackberry’s use, so they were used to the speed.

There were confirmed reports yesterday of a significant speed increase with the EDGE network.  I read where Jobs and Stephenson both said the EDGE network had better coverage and wasn’t a resource hog like GSM, etc…  Also, the iPhone automatically and seamlessly switches to wifi when a connection is near.

I’m not knowledgeable enough about any of the cellular networks to be too helpful.  The iPhone would still be the best thing out there even if it didn’t have internet capabilities at all.

I was sort of amazed. I walked right up to the counter and bought one without waiting at the Apple Store in the mall here in Grand Rapids, MI (2nd largest city in Michigan behind Detroit, for those who don’t know). Don’t get me wrong - there were probably 150 people jammed in that little store, hunched over the demo iPhones - so it was real busy.

I had fun navigting to my website (masugadesign.com), and zooming in on my contact info. I then tapped the phone number there on the site, and was asked if I wanted to make a call. I tapped yes and the ol’ phone in my pocket started ringing. I was also typing very quickly with both thumbs in less than a minute. I think, despite some of the drawbacks that the phone does have, that it will allow me to be more productive - which is a good thing when running a small one-person business!

Well you might be one of the luckiest in the iphone wars. I live in CA, near San Fran and I mean every city around here is sold out! The Paper read there were lines upon lines of people waiting for 10+ hours to get their hands on this; all over the Bay Area. Man you’d think this thing was solid gold! I think I’m in the wrong business though, some people were getting paid good money to stand in these lines all day long. WOW !

Oh and it’s a great thing to hear the speeds are up to par. I hope you’re enjoying your little piece of heaven, stephenslater. It encourages me to think this might help the small business minded. NOW I REALLY WANT ONE!!
