Multiple mailing list sign-up during registration

I need to give my users the option of signing up for several mailing lists when they register for the site. I saw that the member module allows one mailing list to be included with sign up (with only one confirmation email for both membership and mailing list), but doesn’t allow for multiple mailing lists. I am planning on creating an extension that will allow multiple mailing lists to be used during registration and I just wanted to check if anyone knew of some existing solution that I have overlooked, or if creating an extension is indeed the best approach.

Also am I missing something, or is there no easy way to export the mailing list emails?

Just bumping this one up… I too would be interested to hear if there is a solution to allow users to sign up for ‘multiple mailing lists’ at registration.
