We actually slightly modified the extension to use checkboxes instead of a multi-select. You can find the code on github.

Hello! So this plugin served us very well for years. Thanks for that!
But now is the time to go from 1.6.8 to 2.7 and EE has multi relationship out of the box. Anyone has any clues on how to upgrade this field?

There’s a path from multi-relation to Playa but I have not seen one to native Relationships.
Depending on the number of your entries and relationships it might be easiest to re-create them.
