When using a relationship field, is it possible to get at the category details related to the selected entry?

Yes it is, as long as you haven’t explicitly disabled fetching the categories in the main channel:entries tag. <https://docs.expressionengine.com/latest/fieldtypes/relationships.html#optimizing-relationships-performance>
