relational fields do not update new entrees

Hi. On an existing site (still on 5.xx) we experience problems with some relational fields. We have had ongoing problems with updating existing entrees 7 relational fields for a long time.
The new data do appear on the site on other places where the are directly called (not through the relational field) and some older entrees do appear through the relational fields. But not all. Parent or children code, no difference.
I emptied cache, also for browser. Checked with some other browsere, no better result. What could be wrong?
How can I force the data to appear? This is so frustrating.
A long shot but do you have plenty of disk space on the server?
Upgrading EE is a possibility.
Are you running behind a proxy/cache of any sort?
Are you using EE’s file caching, and is the cache folder writable (i.e. do you have an old cached file that can’t be deleted?)
