How to restrict frontend entry by member rather than role?

Does anyone have any suggests of a robust method for restricting and granting access to individual users NOT roles to different categories or entries.
I thought of a simple pipe string or object, and a little stringy stuff to check if people IDS are in. But I thought I might be over complicating it. Is there somethign out the box that does this, or perhaps an addon?

There is indeed an add-on for that! GB Gated Content . The category might be a bit trickier, but you could control the display of the entries in that category.
