How do I transfer an EE site from one provider to another, who do you use

How Do I?

Hopefully someone can help. I’ve been with my current provider for 20 years and have run my EE site for over 10. They have just tripled my renewal so am looking for alternatives. Is it hard to move the site. One of the sites digital-watch.com is very big. What providers do other people use and if possible what do they charge?

Thank you in advance Adam

Transferring a site should be pretty simple but requires you have FTP & Database access and understand how to use them. In a nutshell, really, all you need to do is to ZIP up the contents of your web directory and download them and then upload them to the web directory of your new host. Same goes for the Database. Using database software (phpMyAdmin, or other standalone) export your database from the original site (I usually download a .sql file) and then create a database at your new host, import the database, and then go into the config.php (system->user->config->config.php) and change the database credentials for the new database. As long as the domain names are the same between the 2 host, that is pretty much all there is to it. If the domains are different, then in that same config.php file you should probably assign the new url to the “base_url” config option, and the new file path to the “base_path” config option. Details on those options can be found in the User Docs.

As to who I use? I have hosting with a company called “Stablepoint” but I know a lot of others use Digital Ocean. Maybe someone else can chime in with their preferred hosts.

Hope that points you in the right direction.

R

Do you need servers or support in any particular country?

Many hosts will transfer your site for you, it’s worth asking potential hosting candidates.

Im in the UK Rob, just need the sites to work as they do now. Nothing fancy, I’ve dumbed them down in recent year to just use EE tags and no real add ons. It would be fantastic if I could find a host that will transfer. Im tring to download one of the sites no and its taking forever. regards Adam

My buddy Gavin (jcogs.net) offers good Uk based EE hosting. I’m sure he can help. And transferring EE sites (for us) isn’t daunting since we do it all the time. just send an email to gavin at jcogs.net

UK here as well! Another option is Lancashire based https://www.clook.net - I’ve use them since 2003, their support is outstanding.

You can find a new provider and they will help you with the data transfer. I took their help and converted all the data of my website. Everything was very quick and I didn’t lose any data.

I just have to say thank you all for your responses. I ended up using Clook.net and I feel like im in a different world. So helpful, not just in the transfer but any queries I have had since have just been amazing. I cant believe I stayed with that awful provider Powweb for nearly 20 years with such awful service.
