vw000 - this sounds like an excellent captcha solution. I will definitely give this a try. Thank you for the bonus insights. Very much appreciated.

Glad to help. Since hCaptcha is a direct replacement to reCAPTCHA, very easy by just renaming a few words, maybe EE developers could add this is an option in future releases.

Glad we got there in the end!

I agree an option for hCaptcha would be handy if you can’t or won’t use Google products.

I’m not as much against using Google products unless it was not related to sending your traffic visitor’s information to them in the background without their consent.

There is a reason Google gives those tools away for free, including hosting popular JavaScript libraries as CDN or free DNS resolvers, etc. They are not really free, they are building data with them. I rather pay for something. In the case of something like reCAPTCHA the issue is even more concerning because It’s not only targeting you (developer or designer), it’s targeting every single person that visits your website. Same as with Google Analytics.

For those using those tools make sure you either get users consent or update your privacy policy to make them aware. There is really no need when there are other solutions. Including for Google Analytics, you can use something self-hosted like Piwik or similar.

And in the case of reCAPTCHA each time a user solves one or fails, it’s actually helping build the AI face/image recognition service from Google. Why should your users be working for free to improve Google’s service? ???

@vw000 - you’re preaching to the converted as far as Google surveillance goes with me 😊
