Is Comment Editing Time Limit actually working?

How Do I?

In the code, I can locate comment_edit_time_limit in several places but it doesn’t seem like the setting is actually used when inserting or editing comments.

Does anyone know how the setting actually works? Thanks!

This setting is meant to reduce comment spam by defining the amount of time that must pass between posting multiple comments.

If you set this setting, are you able to post a comment back-to-back, not following the time limit?

Keep in mind that if you are using an MSM site, this setting is set per-site.

Hello Matt,

From what I’ve discovered from testing, the Comment edit time limit (in seconds) setting on ?/cp/settings/comments doesn’t stop my from posting back to back comments (logged in or not logged in). However, the Comment time limit in the channel settings does indeed stop the consecutive submissions. In the documentation it says it’s the time restriction before the same user can post another comment but maybe it’s for editing? However, it also didn’t stop me from editing the comment even when I set it to 3000.

I looked at the comment module code and found that there is a private function that reads the comment_edit_time_limit setting but it doesn’t seem to be called in other methods.

It is supposed to limit the time a comment can be edited on the front-end. Have you been logged in as a Super Admin when you tested it?

In the documentation, it says number of seconds that must lapse after a comment is posted before that same user can post another comment.

On the settings page /admin.php?/cp/settings/comments it says Length of time that a user can edit their own comments.

Both are not true when I test submitting and editing comments logged in as a Member with permission to post and edit and delete “own comments”.

The channel-specific Comment time limit does in fact stop me from posting the second comment as it says.

Sometimes issues with features like these can be resolved through software updates or patches. Ensure that your software Immaculate Grid is up to date.

If you’re working with a frontend framework, ensure that the UI respects this limit. There might be client-side checks that prevent editing beyond the allowed time frame.

The comment_edit_time_limit setting is designed to control how long a user has to edit their comment after posting, usually in minutes. However, in some platforms or older versions of software, the geometry dash 2.3 setting might exist in the code but not be fully implemented or enforced in the front end. This can happen if the feature wasn’t finalized or integrated properly. You might need to check whether the function that processes comment edits is actually referencing this setting when validating edit permissions.
