Thumbnails not showing

Folks:
I am switching a static site to EE (one of a couple under the same install). I have synced the existing image folder without a problem but there are no thumbnails. If I upload a new image, also no thumbnail.
I’ve searched around for a thumbnail setting without success.
Any assistance would be great.
I traced this to a path issue in the settings. Fixing the path issue brought up a broken image (file can’t be found) vs. nothing at all. I traced the broken image issue to https being used on the main site but http being used for the sub site main site. Logging into the main site through https shows a broken image while logging into the sub site via http shows the image.
