A 500 internal server error general indicates something wrong with server configuration or the request itself that either way the server can’t process. ExpressionEngine wouldn’t have anything to log here, because whatever error is happening is probably before ExpressionEngine is even instantiated. Check your web server error logs, you should have more information there.
No help from the www logs.

That looks like an access log, not an error log. But again, we aren’t sysadmins and don’t use IIS at all, so you should ask your sysadmin or host for more details on server thrown 500 status codes. This may or may not be relevant to you: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27713763/iis-8-500-server-error-logs
Hi sjcitpro,
Did you manage to resolve this issue in the end? I’m having the same problem after a server migration in that after a successful login I get an internal server error on the CP homepage URL i.e. /admin.php?/cp/homepage but other CP URLs load successfully e.g. admin.php?/cp/settings/general & admin.php?/cp/design
I’m running EE3.5.7 on Linux but any light you can shed on this would be helpful. I’m currently waiting on my host to come up with an error log to hopefully provide more information…
Origin Media if you’re only getting it on the homepage, I suspect it may be related to external calls being made via curl. Let me know when you get access to the Apache error log, it should have a pretty specific error if that’s the case. Alternatively if you would like one of our engineers to directly debug your environment for you, you can put in a support ticket with details and we’d be happy to do so.
Hi Derek,
Finally managed to get access to error log!
These seem to be the errors generated when I try to load admin.php?/cp/homepage
[Fri Sep 29 16:59:22.260558 2017] [fcgid:warn] [pid 9617] (104)Connection reset by peer: [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:52966] mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server
[Fri Sep 29 16:59:22.281302 2017] [fcgid:warn] [pid 9617] (104)Connection reset by peer: [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:52966] mod_fcgid: ap_pass_brigade failed in handle_request_ipc function
This means not a lot to me though! Does this tie in with your suspicions?
No, doesn’t really help unfortunately because mod_fcgid doesn’t really output useful errors. Your server admin may be able to modify the server config to help; googling that error message leads to a plethora of suggetions. Who is the host, could you just switch to PHP-FPM instead?
