I know a lot of folks have seen this video. But, I gotta say as a designer and illustrator I find this to be a very appealing machine, aside from the fact that it runs Windows instead of MacOS 😊
Anyone else have any thoughts on this machine, and the idea of Microsoft closing the gap in terms of quality of experience and innovation?
I’ve been unhappy with Apple’s hardware direction for a while, its a bummer that I am stuck with a low-powered, expensive machine (unless I pay two arms and three legs for Apple’s upgrades). I do wish I could have a legit version of MacOS on a custom built hardware rig. All the power, and all the experience. Both worlds, the best.
Thoughts?
No reason you can’t have both 😊
Hackintosh doesn’t work for me, I want a legit version of MacOS that I can use on a custom built rig. But that doesn’t exist currently.
And yes, Microsoft beat Apple on the hardware front this time. Sweet hardware, still a crappy OS :/
I’m not so sure, yes Windows was crappy for a very long time. But I’m not 100% certain that it continues to be crappy. A lot of what I’ve seen of the newest stuff, and the stuff they are putting on xBox is a renewed and UX friendly design direction. I think they aren’t so far removed from one another anymore. The gap betwixt them used to be so large, now they aren’t so different.
Personally the hardware isn’t the main reason I prefer Apple. Its their OS. I swore off Windows years ago.
I use Apple for their OS, and I think its a bummer that I have to also use their hardware. It used to be super cutting edge and high quality. But its moving closer and closer to be a one size fits all computing ecosystem, and that just doesn’t work for me, and I’m not sure how much longer it can. Ironically, as their computers get less configurable, the work I’m doing becomes more complex and requires more power from my machine.
I’m on windows. And have been for a long time. I guess i’ll be on windows for a bit longer. I would really like to work on a mac, because loads of developer tools are way easier to use/setup on a mac. However, budgetwise, a good macbook is not an option. In a configuration i would like to own, prices are around € 4000. The same kind of power i can get in a Windows system for under € 2000. Sure, some tasks take longer / are more complicated on a windows system, but it doesn’t justify the enormous price difference. And also, i don’t work at the starbucks so i don’t have to be one of the cool guys there. But to be able to run osx on a windows system would indeed appeal to me. Especially since the last apple event, when the prices announced to be over € 2600 for the basic model of the 15” model, i’m not looking at a new mac anymore.

Yeah I noticed that the pricing has all gone up too. Which I guess is business, but it makes the relatively low powered machines look even less tempting. The Surface Studio is very expensive as well, but it comes with a full computer, and a 28 inch drawing tablet.
As for the tools, I think Windows is getting better on that front too. It depends I guess, if you’re building for the web, you’re likely fine on whichever. But if you’re building specifically for the Mac or iOS, you’re going to have a better time on MacOS.
I’m not sure what the right answer is. Currently I’m pretty entrenched in the Apple ecosphere, so a change to Windows would bring more trouble than it’s likely worth. But, I would like to see Apple wow me again, the way Microsoft did last week.
Unless you’re doing really high end video work or editing multi-gigabyte PSDs a 16gb/2.5ghz MBP is more than enough for pretty much anything these days, especially if you’re a web developer.
While that may be accurate, I’m not sure I like it. I want to be able to “work” on my computer when it starts to tank, not have to buy a new one.
It remains to be seen if Surface Studio will be a successful product. Apple has deliberately avoided touchscreens on their notebooks/desktops due to the fact that interacting with the UI has not proven to be a good user experience. In this case from what I can gather the screen is used as a creative tool, which makes sense. But to be fair, the “specs” of the 3K Surface Studio aren’t that great either…

Absolutely true. It is a new product, and as such it’s untested in the marketplace. re: touch While that is true of MacOS, Windows was built around a universal input ethos, so touch is natural for Metro UI, and works the same on tablets, and desktops alike. The specs are 80% specs. But upgrades for a PC aren’t near as expensive as upgrades for a Mac these days.
