How Not to Autolink (Category) Custom Fields

I have category custom fields, one of which holds a URL. When I use that custom field in a template, EE (3.3) automatically converts it to an href= link, which I do not want. I have turned off that behavior for the channel, but is there really no way to do this for custom fields? I can think of a few ways to work around this issue, but they all seem unnecessarily, well, hackish.
