I’m trying to update from EE 2.5.5 to 2.10.3 and get this error during the update process.
Error Number: 1048
Column 'protect_javascript' cannot be null

ellislabs support worked with me on this. they said my db was fine so they had me add this…
In your system/ee/installer/updates/ud_2_09_00.php file can you add the following at line 233:
$template->protect_javascript = 'n';
