UK Non-profit / Charity related question

Not strictly EE, though it is connected as we’ve been commissioned to make an EE site for a client but within this remit we’re also tasked to set-up a non-profit/Charity which the entity will function through (disclosure if needed: we’ll be connected with this charity/association and do the EE work pro bono).

Can anyone point me in the direction of resources for setting up the Charity/Trust/Non-Profit structure in the UK? Ideally a forum or StackExchange where I can ask things of experts and get up to speed?

Any and all advice welcomed… apologies if this is too far OT.

I can’t offer advice or direction for this topic, but I will say it’s perfectly appropriate for discussion in the EllisLab forums, so no worries there.

I’ve worked on a few UK charity type sites. What particular things are you concerned about?

Hi Rob, thanks for the reply - basically about the format of the association, not so much EE. Probably a charity is too complex to set-up so we’re wondering if the set up is a straight limited company but run not for profit, what the legal requirements would be for proving it is non-profit… if that makes sense!

https://www.gov.uk/setting-up-charity/set-up-a-charity is worth a read if you haven’t already. Most non-profits I’ve worked with all have charity status but http://www.resourcecentre.org.uk/information/legal-structures-for-not-for-profit-organisations/ is worth a read for ideas.

Thanks Rob… I’ll check these out right now - cheers!

If they are asking you to set up a charity for them, I’d be wary, it seems like neither yourself or the people involved know what that involves. Charities are very worthwhile and rewarding but a lot of hard work, and that is when they are established… Drop me a message if you want, I’ve worked most of my life in the charity sector, including running one registered charity and one unincorporated association.

Have you considered forming as a B Corp? Sometimes when the lines between Charity and Business are a little blurry, a Benefit Company is the way forward.

My company became a Certified B Corporation about 3 years back:
