New to EE - is there such a thing as a backup that automatically backs up files and database somewhere outside the host?

Welcome to EE! Glad to have you.

There sure is. We recently just wrote a guide to backing up ExpressionEngine. It’s actually a guide to back up about any kind of site and you don’t need any EE-specific tools to do it. But there are some third-party add-ons for EE that can assist with this if you’d rather, Mithra62’s Backup Pro and Backup Pro(ish) and EEHarbor’s Safe Harbor seem to be popular ones.
