Can anyone recommend any good reliable hosting for an EE site? Would like it to be cheap but not so cheap that its unreliable or so.

Thanks

Depends on your budget and if you want cloud, vps or dedicated? Just Host, 1and1, godaddy, uk2 and hostgator are all very popular, there should also be plenty of support too. You can probably save a bit by asking for a discount or using a coupon code from one of these sites

I am with godaddy and had no problems!

Hey there @JandyK,

Did you get the information you were hoping for or would you like some more suggestions?

Take care, Reuben

We host on Nexcess and it sounds like many of our customers are happy with them as well. Whoever you choose, be sure to read this article we posted a while back, could end up saving you!

Nexcess has been the best so far for me as well… Definitely stay away from the GoDaddy’s of the world, and I’ve had a lot of issues with Media Temple as well.

From our experience, I’ve gotta agree if it’s a business project, stay away from the budget hosting options out there. IMO in what you save in monthly costs you’ll most likely experiene lower quality service and service headaches.

Our best experiences have been with Rackspace (Cloud), MediaTemple (DV) and A Small Orange (Cloud VPS). I wouldn’t personally want to run ExpressionEngine on a shared host, though I haven’t really tried to on anything other than a development project. They can be slow and frustrating. Cloud/VPS/DV are fast and usually pretty reliable. Cost will be more than $20 per year, but the speed of the control panel for content creators and a fast loading front-end will provide the best experience for your website’s users.

The article that was mentioned previously should be your first stop before you purchase any hosting. And if you’re a tech novice, I’d recommend finding a pro who can help guide and inform you of your choices and options. Hosting is the backbone of your business online, so I recommend folks budget for it accordingly.

The companies I mentioned above all offered great support and pretty reliable service. My two favs were Rackspace and A Small Orange. But, keep in mind, this is just general information, all business’ needs online are different, what works well for one may not work for another.

Hope this helps, Reuben

+1 for what flyDuo (Reuben) said. My recommendation is Site5 - I”ve been using them for 8+ years and anytime I’ve needed support they’ve been amazing. I have no complaints and neither have any of my clients or friends using them.

I would definitely concur with Sean’s recommendation about Site 5. I have used them for about 5 years now and their support is incredible. I have a reseller account and EE runs great.

Please consider other costs than price per month.

I personally use Linode, and love it. +1 to stay away from budget hosting sites. I wonder if there is a non-commercial rubric out there that we could reference. Most of the “how to choose a web host” seem to be thinly veiled advertisements.

Best of luck.

Inspired by this thread I wrote a blog post on How to Choose a Web Host.

I too vouch for Nexcess, top notch customer service. Also, I’m glad that, according to other poster, Site5 is still a good host, I used them many years ago and only moved out because their basic plan lacked some feature I needed at the time.

Another vote for Nexcess. I have also had good experiences with MediaTemple, but only on a DV server. Not on shared/grid, that was terrible.

Hmm..

I inherited a client on Rackspace Cloud and:

1 - the CP is dog-slow 2 - the front-end is dog-slow 3 - We just had the site go down, something to do with “I-nodes” them having to be cleared (I have never heard of an I-Node)

I’ve been pushing to get them off Cloud to something else to boost performance to what see using ArcusTech, etc.

Hey @Boyink!,

That sucks man, sorry to hear that. It would definitely sour my feelings if we’d experienced anything similar.

We were with them shortly and had no issues, and beyond performance, especially appreciated their level and quality of customer service. I used to contract with an agency who’d used ‘em for years and loved ‘em as well.

@JandyK, and anyone else on the hunt for web hosting: I hope this feedback is helpful, it’s a great example of how hosting is an important and integral decision for your online success. Do you research, if you’re not a web professional yourself get some input from one.

Thanks, Reuben

Just throwing my voice in here, I can also say that I have had a truly horrible experience with RackSpace. Slow, not well administrated, slow and unhelpful support.

+1 for Linode. Fast and allows full control. I love it. But it’s not for the faint of heart. You’re basically rolling and administrating your own server.

I’ve had mostly good results with Nexcess. Their support staff is always super responsive and helpful.
