Using PEARmail for user notifications and forum notifications

Our host facility (Hostmysite) has been going through a huge change with server upgrades and they no longer allow the use of PHPMail. sigh We are now required to use PEARmail using the same SMTPAuthentication we have access to.

I have tried using the default choices (PHPmail, Send Mail and SMTP) on the email configuration page and none of them work.

My question, is there a relatively easy way to modify this in EE? So, my last option is to attempt to make it work with PEARmail. Any advice and help to make this transition would be greatly appreciated.
