Working around existing site?

I have an existing site built in HTML and Perl.

I need to reimplement a redesign of this site in EE - while the existing site stays up and running.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

If necessary, I can get access to a dev server, but the preference for this client is to install EE to the live site and develop there without affecting the existing site.

Does the existing site launch off index.php or index.html? If the latter then EE can pick up on the .php page.

It launches off index.php before index.html.

We can try to manage that with .htaccess, because it is a server-wide setting unfortunately.

EDIT: But it appears that what you are saying is that if we can keep the existing site launching off index.html, there should be no issues with running EE side by side.

I think you can just rename EE’s index.php to something else and it can live alongside your current site.

Okay, that sounds like a good starting place. Thank you!
