Tags in Forums & Wikis?

WE are brand new to EE, and we are starting to build a custom intranet for a multi-brand franchise. All brands will live under one roof, and will be tied to various custom groups so they can see their silos in each of the modules. Then the CORP user group can see all brands etc…

We are looking to integrate tagging into the various modules and components we are building, so the user could find similar items throughout their part of the ecosystem.

We are looking at using a plugin like Tags, but can we extend, or build tags into modules like the EE Forum system and Wiki?

Example, the company has an annual conference, so a perfect tag would be (2015 expo). We would love to be able to allow users to tag posts, downloads, videos, news articles, wiki posts etc with that… then when searched, all related (2015 Expo) items would be available.
