Hi,
We have had an EE website built for us, and it is almost complete.
It is now delivered and we want to gain some basic undertsanding of how it all works before engaging help from another EE developer (or even doing some development oursleves).
The EE installation is licenced and functional on our server, but what we would like to do is to experiment with EE development, say by following basic site building tutorials.
We don’t have a multi site licence, so we are wondering what our options are, e.g. to install a trial EE version in a different area of our server.
Any thoughts as to the best options for this would be much appreciated 😊
Many thanks John
Hey -
First - a bit of disclaimer. Your site could have been built in any number of different ways by the original developer. I’d recommend asking them for any resources that might help you understand what they did.
Second - don’t use the live environment as a playground for learning. Either you’ll be concerned about breaking something and not truly learning EE, or you’ll break the site and learn but also cause issues for your site’s visitors.
I’d recommend installing WAMP/MAMP on your local machines and use it to learn EE on.
Now..the thinly veiled sales pitch..😉 I have recently completed on Train-ee.com a free set of tutorials around building a responsive portfolio site:
http://www.train-ee.com/courseware/free-tutorials/category/building-a-portfolio-site
I also have a book for sale there that covers building a Small Business site. The free tutorials are..free, while the book is much more closely edited and supported with screenshots, etc. The HTML used in the book is admittedly out of date but the EE principles covered are not.
Wow - Thanks Boyink!
No shame in promoting your work…. when it’s so awesome.
Bought your missing EE2 owner’s manua - perfect for our needs, and we are working through your tutorials… which are a perfect complement to the book.
One clarification: using WAMP/MAMP on our local machine to learn EE on, could we run your tutorial set ups with just a trial version, or must we have one of the licences?
Excellent work all round - just like tutorials all ought to be,
Thanks again John
Thanks for the comments!

Looking at the feature comparison chart: https://store.ellislab.com/#ee-core
About the only thing I see that you wouldn’t be able to do using Core is Template Routes that the Portfolio series covers.
I just recently came across such a terrific piece of writing as “A Rose For Emily” and it prompted me to look into it for more information. That’s why I recommend that you also look here for examples of essays about A Rose For Emily https://studydriver.com/a-rose-for-emily-essay/ . I, for example, was able to learn a lot more about the backstory and underlying meaning of the work. It’s very helpful actually. Good luck.
