Do you need the ability to choose images onesy-twosy everywhere? Putting one image per entry is tedious on the content entry side. Using a Matrix field in the Gallery channel would allow multiple images per entry, would speed the entry process up, but those images would be then “clumped” together everywhere.

If you keep one image per entry in images, put the relationship field in the News channel and allow multiple relationships to choose all the images for that story.

Same with other channels - if you want to pull images put the relationship field in the other channel, pointed at images. This way you choose the images in the same entry where you are specifying other content (vs. having to go edit a bunch of image entries to point them at a new parent).

Past that you’ve lost me a bit..😉

Ok… so putting the relationship field in the main other channels (1) vs the image gallery channel (many) makes sense as only 1 channel entry will relate to any given image or more.

eg: Enter a news or event entry and select the one or more related images.

Now I just need to work out how to write the tag on the Image Gallery page itself to show a list of entries (parent entries and/or parent channels) that have images linked to them:

eg: Side bar links in groups to filter all images on the image Gallery Page:

  • Image Categories List (no problem)

  • Channel Group List (channels that have any entries with one or more related images - when news is clicked all images related to any news entry are shown)

  • Mixed Channel Entry List (any entries that have one or more related images from all other channels - when news article 100 is clicked all images related to this one article are shown)

Are these formed from {exp:channel:entries channel="news|events" +++some form of limit/filter/search tag parameter} or {exp:channel:entries channel="gallery" +++some form of limit/filter/search parameter}

I’m still not really following.

You’re after a page that shows a bunch of images with no context or groupings? Listed by…entry date?

Then sidebar links with news story titles?

Click a news story and the big bunch of images filters down to the ones linked to by the news story clicked on?

I’d have to see that mocked up or wireframed - I just can’t quite grok it.

Per-image it’ll be easy to show what entries are linking to it - just use the Parents tag.

IMHO one image per entry will quickly become tedious. I’d recommend roughing this in and (if it’s not you) letting the person responsible for entering the content experiment with it.

Thanks for the help… I will mock this up and try… I know per image entry might be tedious but normally there will only be 1 or 2 images added per week to the overall gallery of all images. Only on occasion (such as an event) will there be a group of images at once to be uploaded). From what I understand while it is more tedious on the entry side it allows for more flexible manipulation afterwards.

Yes… we really are just creating a site ‘gallery page’ of all images. Having image categories is one way to filter them from ALL down but we also want the concept of dynamic Albums for filtering also. The album names would be other channel entry titles such as an event entry or a news article. Not every news or event article would have gallery images just some special ones from time to time.

So… a bunch of gallery images could be displayed in the news or event article itself (show related child entries) and on the gallery page the images could be filtered down by album name (show parent news or event article titles in a list).

Not all images will have a parent. Mostly images will just go into the gallery with a category tag alone.

So if the sidebar lists are just “show News channel titles where the entry has photos selected” that’ll be easy using some conditionals and count variables within your code.
