Possible to update site DB and forum DB separately?

I have to redesign part of a site, including the data structure of one of its channels, I mean… weblog!

So I need to mirror the site on my dev server to make the changes but the site has support forum which cant be online. So what I’m thinking about doing is:

  1. Download DB locally on dev server
  2. Work on redesign etc. locally
  3. Update just the forum on local server with content from live server
  4. QA and then sync the whole thing back up on live server

Is that possible? I guess I don’t know for sure which table I should update in step #3 above and/or if there’re any dependencies I should worry about.

It’s EE v1.7.1 + forum 2.2.0

Thanks!

Hi minimal design,

Eeesh… there is no great way to do this - but your plan is sound. You’ll want to be sure to deal with any “exp_forum*” tables when you do the final switch-a-roo.

You should be able to just deal with those tables.

Test. Test. Test.

Backup. Backup. Backup.

Cheers,

So, besides user registration, the data is self contained in the exp_forum* tables? Once that’s confirmed, feel free to move this to the “how to” forum for tips on how to deal with potential new users (registered on live site while I’m working on dev site…)

Thanks!

That is correct!

I’ll just tuck this in on Development and Programming then.

Cheers,
