Creating a plugin/module

Hi all. I have never created a plugin or module, and have only basic PHP knowledge. However, a project I am currently working on requires me to start learning how to do this and I am keen to learn. The problem is, I am struggling to find much in the way of reading material on the subject. Does anyone know of anywhere that gives a good tutorial, or guide to creating such plugins/modules?
