Too many segments not 404ing

This (or a similar) issue was marked as fixed in 2.4 (https://support.ellislab.com/bugs/detail/17424).
I was running 2.4, but was still seeing the error, so I assumed it was perhaps fixed in a minor release. However, if I load a domain on an EE site running 2.5.2 as follows I get the too many URL segments error and not a 404:
domain.com/sd/sd/sad/a/sd/sa/da/sd/sa/d/sa/d/as/d/as/d/d/sad/sa/d/sa/
Running the approved method to remove index.php.
