Profile Photo API?

I want to be able to set a members profile picture programatically. I will have the URL of the picture I want to use, and will do the following:
1) Use cURL or otherwise to get the picture file 2) Save it in the appropriate place locally 3) Set it as the users profile picture
Is there any kind of API I can use to the members module? Or is there a recommended way to do this without breaking/bypassing the core code?

I had a quick look though the ExpressionEngine Developer Documentation and the Member Module doesn’t seem to be on the list. Both Solspace User and Zoo Visitor have done some amazing things with ExpressionEngine Member Profiles, you might have a look at those products and see if they offer a solution.
The EE developer Community might be able to offer more insight, so I’m going to move this over into Development and Programming.

Can anyone else in the community help me with this? I am actually using the Solspace User module, and can’t see a way doing this either.
Any help in the best way to do this would be great.
