use php to add custom field entries?

I have a custom field where the value entered is a number. How can I get all the values of that field, from all the entries in a channel, and add up those numbers? I am a php noob.

are all of the entries being displayed on the same page of the site?
Or do you want to retrieve the data directly from the database and process it?
