Display Character Count in SAEF Fields

Anyone know of a way to display the character count of SAEF fields in EE 2.x? I found this plugin by Masuga Design that does exactly what I need: http://masugadesign.com/the-lab/scripts/md-character-count/ (and an older forum discussion about the plugin here: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/96988/P0/), BUT it’s for EE 1.x and is meant for CP display. I need 2.x and SAEF compatibility. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
