EEmail class - special characters in the subject

I’m writing a module which sends emails, using the built in EEmail class. I want the subject to include the £ (UK Pound) sign, but the pound sign does not display correctly. Does it need to be encoded in some way? I’ve tried a few things but haven’t managed it so far.

Are you using 1.x or 2.x? can you share the basic code you’re using for sending the email?

I think this might be related to my question about garbled email text in the from, subject, body, attachements, etc (link).
