I’m running EE 2.1 Build 20100810.
I’m trying to figure out how to replace a file using the file manager so the file name stays the same instead of having a number appended to file name. At first I didn’t think this was possible in EE, but I found this forum post where Brandon says it is possible: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/169124/
For example, I have a file named “specialfile.pdf” that is being pointed to from several channel entries and I need to allow my users to upload a new version of that file. If I tell them to go into the File Manager and upload a file with the same file name into the upload directory, the file is uploaded as “specialfile1.pdf”. I know that they can first delete the file and then re-upload a file with the same name, but this gets a bit tedious if they are replacing a lot of files at once.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Hi, Stephen. Replacing a file using the stock File Manager isn’t possible out of the box. I’m sure this would make a great Feature Request if it isn’t out there already. I don’t know how difficult it would be to create an extension to manage this work flow. Would you like me to move this to the Development forum for additional community support?
Thanks Sue - that would be great if you could move this over to the development forums. I just submitted a feature request for this as well. I’m wondering what Brandon had in mind when he said you could overwrite files using the file manager in the post I referenced above.
Thanks!
As the one who asked the question in the mentioned forum post, I am also wondering what he had in mind. I haven’t been able to find any way to make this work, but it would sure save me time if it were possible.
I was also wondering if there is any way to see what entries files are attached to. For example, if I wanted to delete a file, it would be nice if I could first see any entries that link to the file to make sure I don’t end up with broken links on my site.
