Dynamic Wildcard creation

I’ve always been interested in having dynamically created, membership-based wildcard domains, such as Basecamp does (Ex. username.domain.com).

My hold up with this is I’ve never been able to figure out what’s required to do this.

What is the proper procedure to go about this? I can do the code, I just don’t what to code for.
