Is there a way to hide channels from the publish tab (but not the possibility to edit entries belonging to that channel) without any extensions? There was a perfect solution for this in EE1, but can’t seem to find a way to do it in EE2.
You can edit a specific member group’s permissions under “Channel Assignment”. Unfortunately this puts editing and publishing together, so there is not yet a native way to do what you are asking.
It might be helpful for someone to port that add-on to EE2, but it isn’t exactly secure. It’s purely for aesthetics and simplification for clients.
What exactly do you need this for?
If there is content that the client doesn’t need to edit, but may need to be edited by an admin (or an IT person working for the client) I’ll have it in it’s own channel that only admins can see, or use a snippet (if it’s global content). Or if the site uses the category structure, I’ll have a special category group for pages of the site that are outside the scope of the navigation, and disallow access to that category group for new channel entries.
