can't load a view from a plugin

I looked around for any updates or evidence this problem got fixed and didn’t find anything. Should this be viewed as a bug and added to the tracker or is it working as intended?
as an update, it doesn’t work in the mod.whatever.php files, only the mcp.whatever.php files. So basically can’t use views in the front end except via fieldtypes.
You can - and I do so regularly - but you have to wrench things into shape a bit.

edit: err, nevermind. was thinking of the wrong thread. thanks for the link, and that’s essentially what I ended up doing as well.
