Displaying errors in the CP

Having a difficult time trying to figure out how to display an error message similar to the required field error. Seems to be returning to the preview screen however how can my extension accomplish the same thing and not reach the “View Entry” screen.

$OUT->show_user_error() shows an error screen, and $DSP->error_message() doesn’t prevent from reaching the View Entry screen.

So how can I do a check after submit of the publish form, which I have working, but redirect back to the publish form if an error occurs and prevent the publish from completing?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
