New extension: Entry REEdirect

My clients often get confused by the “preview” screen they come to after publishing or updating entries. Frankly, I do too. So here’s a fix for that.

Entry REEdirect is an ExpressionEngine extension that allows you to control, on a per-weblog basis, where authors land after publishing or updating entries in the ExpressionEngine control panel.

For each weblog you have three redirect location options for both new entries and updated entries:

  • Default Preview - EE’s built-in success screen with ugly entry preview
  • Publish Form - new entry screen for the same weblog you just published to
  • Manage Entries - the Edit tab, filtered to display entries from the weblog you just published to
  • 1.0.1 UPDATE: Edit Entry - keep editing the entry you just published or updated

In all cases the author will see a “success” message for their new entry or update, along with the entry’s title and an “Edit this entry” link.

The Extension Settings screen offers optional one-click setting of all of your weblogs to the same option for both new entries and updated entries. (This feature requires that jQuery for the Control Panel be installed loading jQuery 1.3 or newer.)

Entries submitted via SAEFs will be be unaffected by this extension.

Entry REEdirect has been tested on ExpressionEngine 1.6.8.

Nice. I know this was already done within another extension (maybe publish tweeks?), but it had loads of other tweaks that I didn’t need (and at the time clashed with Publish Page Improvements). This sounds perfect.

Thank you.

Glad to be of help. I wasn’t aware of Publish Tweaks, just had a look. A key difference here is that you’re in full control over where users are redirected in the case of both new entries and updates, and for each weblog.

Just been playing with it - very nice and flexible. Wish I’d had it a few days ago when I had to wade through editing loads of entries.

One future addition you might want to consider is to save and remain within the same entry…?

Thank you for releasing it.

That’s what Quick Save is for. 😊

I have Publish Page Improvements installed and Quick save turned off (keeps it simple) - see attached.

Publish Tweeks had that feature, so assume there’s a requirement from others for it.

Fair enough - just updated the extension to 1.0.1 to add this option.

As I’ve been working on a site with a lot of new entries today, the persistent “success” message on new entry screens began to bug me. So I just pushed a small update that disappears the success message after 5 seconds. (CP jQuery required.)

This is really helpful. Thanks for releasing it. One of the sites I’m working on has a lot of categories within each weblog. Is there a way to set it so that filters to the category as well?

Kasdesign: You might want to try adding this extension as well: Edit Remember

Could be tricky, as you can assign multiple categories to a post, so how to decide which one to filter by? I second Twobelowzero’s endorsement of Edit Remember - it’ll fix this for you.

Thanks for responding D-Rock. I figured it might be a bit tricky. The Edit Remember is perfect though. Thanks for your help and for your extension. Good stuff.

Just pushed version 1.0.3 to GitHub, which improves the display of the success message. It’s now a fixed overlay, so when it disappears the screen doesn’t shift. I also added a “close” link to the message.
