I’ve never heard of Magento before now - but that’s a sharp looking piece of software. If I had any sort of product to sell, I could see myself taking a look at that…

Is that part of the EllisLab network?

Or is this lifesaver graphic not too kosher?

I believe that graphic is a stock icon, so as long as they purchased it, it’s perfectly kosher.  Jesse mentioned the group of icons that he purchased for the EE design somewhere, I believe this is one of them.

Was going to but had friends trying the beta and they found it real buggy. Will have to take a look now that it’s a 1.0.

Out scooped on this one. :(
They never really gave the blessing to run the store, when it was in Beta, this would appear to be the green light then. The ticket window is open, as it were.
It’s built using the Zend php framework.
It will be interesting to see where it goes now that it is 1.0 stuff.

The new community site possibly magentoConnect.com will be worth a visit, their earlier sites are running on EE, if I’m not mistaken.

Magento is a product of Varien, which as far as I’m aware, is -not- affiliated with EllisLab in any shape or form.

A while back, the guys at Varien were in these forums discussing Magento.  They are fans of EE and may even attempt to build a bridge between EE and Magento.  Here is the thread:

Drupal will be integrated with Magento: http://www.magentocommerce.com/blog/comments/magento-drupal-integration-project/

I thought there was a huge demand for EE integration too and I see no sign that developments are made in this direction. To my mind, the wisest choice for EllisLab would be to create such integration points under the form of a commercial product… unless this is already something in the works under the radar?

I agree with Aircom – if Ellis Labs were to integrate closely with Magento or spin-off something of their own, they could make a ton of us very happy.

    Us very happy = profits.

Hopefully ecommerce is in the relatively near-term future.

EL has always had an ecommerce module in their plans and the rumor mill had it quite away along in the dev. If rumors were/are true I imagine all the changes coming with EE2 set it back a bit.

EL has always had an ecommerce module in their plans and the rumor mill had it quite away along in the dev. If rumors were/are true I imagine all the changes coming with EE2 set it back a bit.

The sad part of the first sentence is the the first 10 words. “EL has always had an ecommerce module in their plans…”

And I’ve always had plans to lose 20 pounds, work out more, eat better, and watch less TV.

I know, I know, the simple ecommerce module was written to fill the gap until the real thing came out, but you do have to admit, it has been a perpetual wait. I got pretty flamed over calling the ecommerce module “vaporware” back in July of 06.

I’ve been waiting over 20 months at this point, and expect to see EE 2.0 before you see an ecommerce module for EE 1.6. So what do you say to these people who bought EE solely on the promise of a ecommerce module (I’m not one of these)?

Considering how many people posted in that thread saying that the “work was coming along,” and “would probably be out in a few months,” I wish I’d had the foresight to take bets, wish I had a big enough pair to take bets now.

I think this very issue was part of what prompted EllisLab to get tighter lipped about upcoming features.

Again, like I said in that thread, not trolling. And I know people will passionately defend EE and why ecommerce is not out yet, but at some point these defenses become parodies of themselves. Sorry about the snark.

    Christopher,

This is exactly why we’ve always had this policy.

Nobody, to my knowledge, has purchased EE solely on the promise of commerce. We’ve always advocated that a purchase decision be based on what’s currently available. We’ve never said otherwise.

We’ve already publicly stated that EE 1.6 will not have a commerce module. EE 2.0 is first, for very important reasons.

Is Magento a proven hit?  Has anything been done with it yet?

Varien makes gorgeous sites, but that doesn’t show that they develop good software.
