Is Magento a proven hit? Has anything been done with it yet?
It just came out of beta. I didn’t try the beta but friends said it was real buggy.

We’ve already publicly stated that EE 1.6 will not have a commerce module. EE 2.0 is first, for very important reasons.
I did not realize this regarding EE 1.6. And as far as the Roadmap thing, wasn’t just talking about that. When EE 1.0 came out I remember asking after galleries and forums as well, and getting predictions on when they would be out, but after proposed dates came and went, this fed into the idea of being tight lipped.
Maybe this is just my perception.
And while I didn’t but EE solely for the ecommerce module, I know I was excited by the idea. I think I maintained that excitement about 6 months. Even if not the sole reason for purchase, I know it did influence some decisions.
I may be a bit jaded.

Yes, its true that people not taking our roadmap statements seriously caused us to be more tightlipped. At the beginning we used to be a lot more open about possibilities but we discovered that people just don’t take our disclaimers seriously which pretty much forced us to stop.

Has anyone played with Magento 1.0 yet. It looks like it has a ton of features, but after reading through some of their docs and forums it seems like a pain to theme. I have an eCommerce project on the horizon and am considering giving it a try. I might be biting off more than I can chew if it is hard to customize though.

I’ve started to look into it for the same reasons you’re considering it—have an eCommerce site on the horizon. It’s not awfully difficult to theme, in my opinion. If the phpBB and WordPress templating systems had a love child, I think the Magento theming system is what would result.
If you haven’t already, take a look at the Designer’s Guide.

Well at least it looks more accessible and has better code structure then many I have tried. After using Cube Cart, I am looking for something simpler. This could be the one.

I just cannot install it, if I could I would love to play with it on on my servers. It looks great.
BTW: The magento site is creates using EE, found that out as someone asked in there forums what the forum soft was and they replied EE.
