I’m having a bit of trouble getting photos to display correctly.

The source all looks correct and I’ve checked it against the same source to view a photo attachment here on the EE Forums.  They appear to be identical (though I might be mistaken on this).

The photos are uploaded to the server correctly, and all directory permissions are set to 777.

My phpinfo.php page shows that my GD mod is enabled.

However, the thumbnails do not display properly, nor do the full-size versions.  They simply are displayed as broken images (in IE) or just the alt text (in Firefox).

Below is a link to an example of the problem I’m experiencing.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you FTP in to /images/forum_attachments/ - are your attachments there?

Yes they are.  The attachment procedure seems to work fine.  Both the original, as well as the thumbnail versions are created successfully.

You have custom avatars on your site, so file uploads in general must be working.  Downloading one of the bad files, it looks like the image and/or its headers are corrupted.  What if you try to attach an image that you know displays properly in the browser, for instance, download this file and try to attach it on your site.

If it’s not the source image itself, It could be a problem with the installed image libraries.

That image is experiencing the same issue.  What GD version is listed in PHP Info as being installed?  And what version and build of ExpressionEngine are you running?  I gather that it’s likely 1.6.0, a July build from the footer of your forums; can you confirm?

GD is bundled with the Red Hat Enterprise I’m running.  In the phpinfo the version is listed as “bundled (2.0.28 compatible)”

And yes, the version of EE is indeed 1.6.0.

There was a bug fix recently that would affect sites running on shared GD 2 libs, so an update may be just what the doctor ordered.  Make sure you update your forums in conjunction with the application, as they work in tandem, backup your site and database before beginning, and follow the update instructions closely.

Upgraded both EE and the Discussion Forum to the newest versions.  No luck.

Tried viewing the forum to see if the thumbs would display.  Negative.

Tried attaching a new image to see if a new one would display.  Also negative.

Allen, if you take a new image and try to attach it here - does it work?

Ok, I have signed up and tested and confirmed that it’s not limited to your browser or local network here.  It would seem to me that it is resizing / cropping that is triggering the problem as the avatar upload went fine.  You could confirm this by using the File Upload feature on the Publish page, resizing and making a thumbnail image there.  It should exhibit the same behavior as what you’re seeing on the forums.

Also go to Admin ›  System Preferences ›  Image Resizing Preferences.  What is selected for your Image Resizing Protocol?  And is ImageMagick available on your server?

    Protocol: GD

ImageMagick is currently not available on the server, but as the server is owned by my organization, I can look into getting it installed.

Ah, that may be it.  Can you try switching it to GD 2 and giving it another go, please?

GD 2 doesn’t seem to work.

I’ve also installed ImageMagick on the server and attempted it that way with no result.
