ok did as you requested and yes permissions are already set to (777)~full access

    what else could it be?

let’s go back to my coding question as previously posted. I know the issue is with the forum not being able to call the correct path where those images are stored. It’s correct in the control panel, you’ve not stated otherwise.

Does that code that I pasted for you have to have the path to the forum_attachments folder in between the quotes? It is currently blank.

I would also like my question answered as to why the path to the forum images can’t be an absolute path..

Hi, trcpusa - as I said:

Yes, it can be an absolute path, and I use one in my own installation.

What path are you trying to set it to?

I would like to set it to:

CP Home ›  Modules ›  Discussion Forum ›  UnionSportsmen.org- Forums ›  Forum Board Preferences

    under attachment preferences:

‘server path to upload directory: must be a server path, not a URL’

    ______________________________________________________

    currently it is:

    /var/www/html/images/forum_attachments/

this is where our forum images are that members have uploaded but cannot see

    _____________________________________________________________________________

Can I change this to a path of:

    http://www.unionsportsmen.org/images/forum_attachments/

    ???????

    _________________________________________________________

What about this coding question in the /var/www/html/USASys/core/core.messages.php file

is that fine that way it is?

Does having the root’s permissions set to ‘0’ override the ‘777’ permissions in the images and forum_attachment folders?

No, it has to be a path, not a URL - they are entirely different things.

I’ve gone back through this thread and the issue wasn’t where the images were being stored, but that they were corrupted after being uploaded.  That indicates that this issue is not a path problem.

So we’re really back to Derek Jones reply here.  It would be good to check with your server admin about GD2 being installed properly, and maybe testing with ImageMagick instead.

trcpusa, for your coding questions, no, the variable you are looking at is a class property that is dynamically set from your preferences.  And you’re confusing server paths with URLs.  See this Knowledge Base article for details.  I know you are probably feeling overwhelmed here, but let me say that doing your own investigating into the code and these other questions is only adding to your frustration.  Please follow Lisa’s lead and benefit from her experience; you’ll get to the bottom of the problem much more quickly.

Currently my image resizing preferences are set for GD2 and there is a path of /usr/lib which I don’t see on the server. For my understanding, when using GD2 you don’t need to specify a path, correct? I am double checking with our host as to what image resizing protocol we are using, unfortunately he will not be able to get back to me until tomorrow morning. I will get back on this forum for further discussion once I know the answer to that question and we can pick up from there. I thank you both for your help today.

No problem, trcpusa.  Correct, the “Image Converter Path” path setting is only used when ImageMagick or NetPBM is selected in the “Image Resizing Protocol” preference.  It wouldn’t affect the use of GD2 to have a value there; my guess is that it was left over from when TrippAllen was running the server and attempted to use ImageMagick.

In the meantime, if you have another server you can install a temporary test installation to in order to get a hang of how it all interacts in a working environment, please feel free to do so.

After re-reading the beginning of this forum I can’t help but realize we’re going in a circle here…back to questioning the resizing protocol and calling our host and asking questions that have already been asked. I guess I need to probe this question myself. In the meantime, and anticipating no resolution once the resizing protocol issue is solved, what is the best way to set up a testing server? Should it be on a completely separate server than what we are using or can it be set up as a subdirectory from the root of our site? Please make recommendation.

I would use an entirely separate machine, trcpusa, as my gut feeling from working with Tripp a few months back is that there is something particular with this server (or the particular package used to configure the server) that is to blame.  The problem he was having hasn’t been encountered by anyone else that I can ever recall, and is not found among users running EE in a professionally hosted environment.

You could use either your localhost, or a host you already have an account with (so long as you install either the free Core version, or a temporary install of the licensed version in a non-publicly accessible directory).

Seems that something we tried over yesterday indeed worked and our members are now able to successfully upload image attachments to the forum. Thank you for your help.
