The design of their new site over there at Magento is impressive (EE to thank for that), it shows a commitment to standards though, validating and all.
Competition in the eCommerce solutions for EE would be a good thing, maybe not what the Ellis Labs team wants to hear, but I suspect they are up to the challenge.
Bring on the Beta for Magento, it must just be available to their dev team over there.

i wonder how magento wants/plans to merge this with EE though..seeing as one is open source and the other is proprietary?

I really like the looks of the Magento cart, in particular if it can be integrated with EE member authentication. I just love the fact that it’s multi-site from the start, not to mention multi-language and multi-currency.

However, this is a major development undertaking. According to the roadmap Magento will be in beta until at least the second quarter of 2008, almost a year from now. A shopping cart is about as business-critical as it gets, so it must be considered unlikely that anyone with brains actually will run their business on Magento before the end of 2008.

I’m not trying to criticize the product or it’s roadmap, I’m just saying that for the next 18 months or more we’ll have to live with the e-commerce solutions that are available now.

Also, if you want to assess Magento in relation to a forthcoming native full e-commerce module for ExpressionEngine, it may be worth thinking about when you last saw a public beta of anything coming from the EE developers. As far as I know, a native EE e-commerce module can have been in restricted beta for months. With 18 months to go until Magento is production-ready, I think I place my bet on the EE module.

well…my first impression upon going to the magento site was actually ‘wow, this looks like EE for e-commerce!’ so of COURSE add me to the list! i would love, love, love to see integration between magento and ee.

it’s great to see you in the forums, roy.

Magento appears to be written on the Zend Framework which is PHP5.  That might leave out a lot of users who are limited to PHP4 hosting.

So, today is the last day for Magento to meet their promised August release date.  Although they still could release it today, I’m betting they wish they had more time 😊.  Kinda makes you appreciate Ellis Lab’s policy of not releasing ETA’s.  I feel for the developers trying to get that thing out the door.

    Comments from their site include:

It’s already 12:49am on September 1st in New Zealand… so expect that it will be released by August 31st at 11:59pm Hawaiian time.

    tick…tock… tick… tock…

I never had a longer august in my whole life ; (

PHP5 will be the standard install on servers before long as PHP 4 is not going to be supported by the PHP dev group.

Everything sure does have an Ellis Lab look and feel over there.  Their forum really speak Ellis Lab.  I wonder if they are running EE for their site.
