E-commerce module / extension / plugin

Just ringing in.. I’d have originally planned to email Leevi a huge list of requests in regards to an e-commerce platform and still intend to do so. But my list and ideas keep on expanding.

I feel that the platform should incorporate essentially most of what is already present in EE, similar to what the the Simple Commerce module does - albeit, it’d need to have a better workflow, perhaps its own independent tab within the publishig entry page.

Most of the content that would be necessary to function as an E-commerce platform should incorporate what already exists in EE, as in the determinants for pricing, quantity, etc. can be inputted into Field Groups. With this workflow, we can have different types of weblogs/field groups for different types of products.

Of course, the E-commerce add-on being a module, it’d have to pull some of the weight and have consideration for things such as live inventory count, statistical output, an add-on for consumer order history, etc. Hence, it’d have to interact/update/modify some of the weblog fields upon the purchase, cancellation, or rejuvenation of inventory.

One of the huge advantages I see with going this route is that, if I were to own a blog that talked about products for example, I can essentially input both the blog entry and the product page in one go on what may seem like two entirely different sites, but that are actually the same.

Perhaps resources should be spent going this route rather than a temporary solution like a bridge.. Just my two cents. This is a foundation to build upon, and doesn’t rely on the hobbyist developer in others to figure out how to use both. In the case of most of the open source E-commerce scripts out there - no matter the age (Magento included), skinning is quite overwhelming to many.

It sounds too good to be true, but if they can make it happen I’m in there 😊

Have to agree with you.  Sounds too good to be true.  But if it works, then it can revolutionize everything.

Only issue I have is with Magento’s is soft good handling.  Apparently they just added that option at the beginning of this year, and some have said its more of a patch than a new feature.

Ok, so they (EE + Magento people) released the public beta, and the pricing of the module is $1,300/year or $2,500 buy-out license.  Hmmmm….no thanks.

Grant, so far they haven’t released anything, you can sign up for a beta here http://www.eecommerce.com/
but only if you’re an EE pro member or Magento partner.
I must say the pricing is just unrealistic: youre offering a bridge between an opensource (Magento) and a modestly priced (EE) piece of software… asking 1299 (per year no less) and 2499 for a perpetual license feels like a rip-off.
Furthermore there’s not even a screenshot of the interface on that webpage… I don’t blame people wanting to make money but this is just silly :coolmad:

I’m more than happy to pay for value.  If your product will save me 20 hours and cost less than the value of those hours then it’s a fair deal.

However - you need to both build my trust in your company and demonstrate the value of your product before I’ll buy or even invest the time in exploring further.

In this case I really have no idea who is behind EE Commerce - the site has PHP UK Ltd in the footer, but I’ve not heard of them nor is there a link to learn more.

There are no screenshots or details about features there, just some marketing speak and a beta registration form.

In short, the price might be fair, but it’s impossible to really tell—and so far the marketing strategy seems awkward and doesn’t do much to instill the trust required for that kind of financial commitment.

But I’m withholding final judgment- assuming the company will react favorably to this thread and the Twitter traffic and fill in more of the picture around both the company and the product.

Agree with eman, that price isn’t going to fly. In my mind, it would have to be around the same price as adding the Forums module or at least not more than EE itself.

Related side story…When I was doing Best Buy one of the big platform vendors wanted a million bucks for their license (plus annual maintenance fees), plus 10% of sales. Not just BBY.com sales but 10% of all of Best Buy sales online or off. They were serious, we just laughed, and laughed, and laughed.

Same as E-Man and PXLated ... I was really looking for the beta, but that price isn’t something my client would ever accept. Sorry.

Please please please please please please please please please tell me that they have the decimal point in the wrong place with those prices.

There is absolutely no way I would ever go anywhere near those sorts of prices for a shopping cart and especially not for a bridge which is what this seems like!

If this is simply allowing you to lay out your items using ExpressionEngine (which would be great) and then just using Magento to hold the actual item and price and such stuff then that price I’m sorry to say is totally ludicrous!

That coupled with the fact that it is a closed beta and there aren’t even any screenshots or anything to see then I am definitely not going to be looking into this - EVER.

I’ve created my own shopping cart plugin which works with ExpressionEngine and the Simple Commerce Module which can be seen in use here. Admitted this only deals with stopping you from having to visit PayPal every time you want to add something to your cart but you can indeed use this plugin with any payment processor that is out there as long as you deal with that part of the implementation yourself.

I wish I could even charge half of what they’re asking for the plugin as I would be rolling in the money 😉

My plugin allows you to template things exactly how you want and send off the payment exactly how you want so I might just set up a page myself!! 😊

I’ve got to say also that I’ve never been able to even get Magento installed because of the server requirements so that’s out from the start anyway!

    Crazy crazy prices those are!

I’m with Michael B. the footer link to PHP UK ltd. blah blah blah, does not instill any trust in this being a bonafied and transparent offering. Smells of vaporware to me, take the money for the one-off and run. Not meaning to pass any judgements, but it’s more than a little bit pricey.
Wasn’t this thread originally Leevi’s “research into the matter” thread?

Agreed.  Its not a new app, its clearly just a bridge between EE and Magento, but if they people can prove actual value to the price point, then I can see paying that price.

But there are no screen-shots, not demo, no documentation; so where is the value?  Not too sure about an yearly fee at $1,300.  That seems a bit absurd.  And besides, its not an app!

Kinda suspect, but I’ll wait to hold final judgment.

Not sure if it means anything to anyone but a quick WHOIS turns up http://www.php.uk.com/ as the site that owns it and a Lee Bolding of St. Albans here in the UK.

Maybe that price includes a fantastic support team? I would love to hear what sort of conversations are happening at EllisLabs regarding this.

Hello there, sorry Leevi - looks like I totally derailed your discussion with my (off-topic) earlier post. Sorry for that… Perhaps we should move this to a new thread?

When you look at the value we get out of EE itself for a very, very reasonable $250 (or whatever the new 2.0 price will be) then I’d suggest any module/extension going beyond that figure is going to face some psychological barriers.

I’d still think it well worth it to get a rather improved EE-native shopping cart for the same price as EE (although not $1300 a year for a bridge to an OS product who’s devs have put in a lot of time an effort to ensure that licensing model). I’d happily pay $100 or so for a bridge that did a good job of populating users across EE and a shopping app., and permitting me to embed the other functions in my EE template with EE-type tags.

Don’t suppose the Ellis Lab team want to weigh in with any indication of the price they were thinking of putting on their own next-gen ecommerce solution?

Whatever happens with the eecommerce initiative I could still see myself supporting an EE-native solution since Magento is a pretty demanding app for a lot of shops… So to bring this back round a bit I’d like to ask Levi his current thinking on this the thread he originally started…

Mark, where can I download/take a look at your plugin?

My jaw hit the floor when I saw the price on Twitter last night. $1300 is steep, but a yearly fee, wow. Like everyone else said screenshots, screencast, feature list, and a demo would be great.

Mark, why don’t you set up a page where you sell your plugin. I’ve seen you mention it a few times, always with an email me for more info. I’m sure you could make a bit of cash with a dedicated page for the plugin with a list of features that it supporrts.
