i voted for paypal integration but i’d also like to see some of the other things added too. Google Checkout (i don’t know much about it, but i assume it is similar to paypal) and i also think regular merchant account type stuff would be great too.

With CartThrob we have support for a number of fully integrated merchant gateways like Authorize.net, SagePay, CDG Quantum, eWay, Paypal Standard, TransactionCentral, and FirstData Linkpoint. We also have support for Paypal Standard, and we’re working on SagePay Form and a few others. Some of our customers have requested Google Checkout, but it’s not currently very high on the list.

Anyway, it’s a work in progress.

Can you detail out how CartThrob differs from FoxEE and FoxyCart?

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions and comparisons, but I’ll leave you with some info about what CartThrob does. Essentially CartThrob is a self-hosted shopping cart system for EE that allows you to store all of your product, coupon, and order data within ExpressionEngine itself. CartThrob is set-and-forget… once you set it up, you never need see it again. Everything is handled by ExpressionEngine blogs and templates.  Your customers won’t need to learn any new systems to use the store. CartThrob is available for a one-time introductory fee of $99 per install (per install, not per site.) It’s multi-language, multi-currency, multi-gateway, multi-site compatible. It’s flexible, extensible, and integrates extremely closely with EE. Gateways such as Authorize.net SagePay, Paypal, CDG Quantum and others are supported.

    Hi Brian,

Chris is correct, it’s up to the developer to draw their own conclusion of what best meets the projects needs. All of the different e-commerce solutions available for EE each have a unique feature that makes them different. The payment process.

The major difference between foxee, simple commerce and cartthrob (as well as others) is Hosted and Self-Hosted. Foxee uses FoxyCart which is a Hosted Gateway Service.

Our philosophy is that using a Hosted solution for your payment processing requirements saves time and money, and is scalable as well. There is a great explanation on PCI compliance, Integration flexibilty and the cost of running a e-commerce store here; Common E-Commerce Myths. Certainly worth a read.

Set up with foxycart is easy, just a few settings and your done, no SSL certificates to install, no cron jobs, no PCI compliance on your server, and it is completely secure using xml cross-check validation and shared authentication.

Once you have set up FoxyCart, foxee is fully integrated into EE. Your catalog is held in a weblog(s), Subscriptions without cron jobs, Discounts, Addon Hooks, Import/Export, Inventory, EE member group control, MSM capable, HTML Emails with tags, Donations, Secure downloadable items, Pricing Options and much more.

I think you could say our philosophy is that making the system wildly flexible is a major bonus. Hosted solutions: awesome. Self-hosted solutions: also awesome.

Because I agree with Michael above about the points he makes, that ecommerce stuff like SSL, PCI Compliance and security is a pain we built CartThrob to work insanely well with a variety of offerings. So, in addition to supporting gateways like Paypal, Authorize.net AIM, SagePay Direct, CDG Quantum, we also have a FoxyCart.com payment gateway available.

Our FoxyCart gateway makes it possible to

    1. Choose to use your own tax, shipping, and coupons settings before sending a final price to FoxyCart for Checkout

    2. Use FoxyCart’s tax, shipping, and coupon settings instead.

Ultimately CartThrob tries to stay our of your way. Build your store the way you want, with an integrated streamlined checkout, or with hosted off-site checkouts like Authorize.net SIM, SagePay Server, or FoxyCart.
