Hello everyone. Wow how I miss this universe. I am in the middle of working with a new client that has agreed to use EE and I am wondering which of the ole standard addons are no longer needed. Some that I used to use religiously include: Structure, Matrix, Low Reorder, Low Variables, Playa, Wyvern/Wygwam, Assets, Freeform, and some that I may be forgetting. Did EE absorb some of these plugins? Did they eventually include their own version of relationships or other functionalities, that no longer requires some of these addons/extensions/plugins? Excited and curious to find out. Thanks for any insights. The last time I worked in EE was at the end of 2016. But made dozens of large sites through out the decade before that. Thanks for any help in bringing me back up to speed!
Welcome back!
You are correct in thinking EE has moved on a bit, the addons you mention Structure, Assets, Freeform and Low’s addons are very much alive. Matrix and Playa have now been superceded with native field types Grid+File grid and Relationships respectively. Wyvern and WYGWAM are still available, both WYGWAM and Redactor are now built into the core.
What might interest you is the newer “Fluid” field type. Each Fluid field can use different “sub” fields that you specify so authors can built page content in multiple blocks - think Matrix on steroids!
There a numerous other enhancements, 1 click updating for EE (3rd party addons still need manual updates right now), many new template variable modifiers as well, and the control panel has had a new lick of paint.
There’s a new EE Pro module ($) which adds extra capabilities, best of which is front end editing.
I probably don’t need to say but install EE6 and have a play with it to see all the new stuff!
YES!!! Thanks so much man! I did install it earlier today and it was like a warm fuzzy home. I saw the new features in pro and yelled “THATS EXACTLY WHAT I BUILT IN 2015!!” hahaha. Really appreciate the reply and update. Apparently this user account that I’m using was my old “extra” account. My main one with many historical posts were under my old work email address. Thanks again.
Welcome Back!
Rob did a great job on the overview!
I noticed that you mentioned Low Vars on your original post, so thought it was worth mentioning that both Low Variables and Low Search are included with ExpressionEngine Pro as well.
I should probably also mention that there’s a lot of us in Slack these days as well.
Cheers,

For instance, Matrix has been replaced by Grid, Low Variables has been replaced by Global Variables, and Playa has been replaced by Relationships. EE also has its own file manager, so Assets may no longer be necessary. However, some addons like Structure and Freeform still have their own unique functionalities that may be useful for your projects.
