Promote entries tagged by native category?

Hello. Maybe a stupid question but is it possible to promote those tagged by native category in a list of entries? Say you’re showing 20, and you want any that are ‘featured’ to appear first in that list. Then by date (or other standard loop param).

One thought was to create a text field and sort by it. A-Z… then client adds an A to those it wants to promote… or b or z. Hacky.

It would be churlish of me to fail to observe that you can of course do this with using layout variable arrays … 😊 🐾
