How Do I?

I’m moving to a new web host and I’m super nervous about moving my blog. It’s turning 16 this year, so any hand holding would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve looked over the help documents and I I know I have to use phpMyAdmin to dump the database and prepare it for the move, but I’m not sure when it makes sense to get current with EE.

Should I upgrade my current database to the new version and move that? Or should I do the upgrade as part of the move? Can I even jump from 2 to 7, or do I have to do a version in the middle as well?

If anyone has any tips / tricks to share regarding a move like this, that would be great. (Have I said I’m super nervous? LOL)

I’d approach it something like this:

  1. Set up a development/copy of your existing site
  2. List out what 3rd party addons you use, if any, and have upgrades/replacements ready (this needs a bit of homework as not all EE2 addons are EE7 compatible, many do)
  3. Download latest EE7 and do a test update to your development site (you can now upgrade 2 to 7 directly)
  4. Update 3rd party addons to your new EE7 setup
  5. Make a note of any obstacles you face and how you fixed them

Once you have a fully working EE7 version then copy that over to your new host.
