Display entries based on custom field

Is there a way to display entries based on a custom field? I thought I had a method for doing that, but I can’t make it work.

Is the search parameter on the channel entries tag what you are looking for? It lets you specify to only retrieve channel entries in which a custom field matches a certain value.
