Auto-increment field

Hi All,

Was wondering if someone could help me with an issue I’ve run into.

I’m working on an animal rescue site and each animal has their own unique ID number. The problem is, the rescue wants to take the responsibility of updating the ID number out of the volunteer data entry person’s hands.

So what does this mean?

Well, each animal will have their own entry with the ID field being one of the channel fields. The ID itself needs to consist of three parts. One part to designate whether it’s a cat or dog, the second part is the year and the third part is an incremental number.

ie.: d-14-123 or c-14-123

I’ve checked out the auto-increment plugin but it’s very limited - it only applies incrementing to new entries, old ones are left in limbo and I don’t know how to add a year to it as a prefix.
