Control Panel Home Page Modification

Hello everyone,

I’ve been searching for some time for a tut or what not but with little luck so I’ll ask the forums. What I want to do is add a module to the control panel home page that will allow an admin to select a specific content item. The selection would then be reflected in the site’s front-end home page.

Now I imagine I’ll need to use a hook of some sort but overall I’m a bit lost on how to go about this or what to look into to start making headway. Should it be a plugin or does it need to be a module (etc.)?
