Issues with File Manager image manipulations and listing them

I am working on an EE install and part of the site is creating smaller versions of logos when the client uploads them for use in lists via the templates. This was not the issue. The issue arose when the client requested the ability to select the smaller image from the file manager for use in the content editor (using WYGWAM v2.4.0.2).

I thought I would be clever and create a new directory and point it at the _med folder (create by image manipulation settings for the main directory) and sync it. It seemed to work as it said it sync’d 43 images but they wont list in the file manager.
