"On This Day" plugin desperately wanted

Way back in the days of 1.x there was a plugin called On This Day that Yoshi had whipped up which would display a listing of posts which had same calendar date. I really miss being having a “On this day in other years” section for my posts.

I’ve searched high and low and asked around where and when I could, but no one seems to have an answer to this. It was done with 1.x - 2.x is just that much cooler, so isn’t it possible to do again?

How hard would it be to update/upgrade the previously written plugin?
